River bank repairs

Restoration work on eroded river bank: revetment of brash bundles above Farm Pool. Glenn Smithson removed the protruding verticals, leaving bundles for self-vegetation.

Tree felling work

Dave Hudson writes: Yesterday Thursday 9th July, 3 tree surgeons from Treecreeper Arboriculture and 11 club members; John & April Urquhart, Mike & Dan Colley, Keith Stevens, Glenn Marsh, Kevin Kirkpatrick, Denis North, Kerry Jordan and Noel Garner  carried out extensive tree clearance from swims S14 down to S3,making these swims much easier to fish and opening up old swims that have not been fishable for years.
I would like to say thank you to the guys from Treecreeper Arboriculture and especially to the club members who  helped.
We are planning to get Treecreeper Arboriculture back in August ( date to be confirmed) to complete the work mainly on the swims on the north side of the lake.
I hope that members will be able to help at the next work party as many hands make light work.

Replacement of gatepost at parking area

Tree planting

A gift of twelve oak trees from the Environment Agency were planted by club members with April disappearing into a deep hole she dug herself

Environment Agency help

Two gentlemen from the Environment Agency visited and provided much useful advice on managing our lakes, as well as performing a sonar survey of both lakes - pictured.

Installation of platforms on small lake

The platforms are manufactured from recycled plastics and are very durable. The upright posts are 2.0m long - so the effort required to sink them into the ground can be appreciated from the photo of Keith, Kerry and David sitting on the first completed platform. Tired limbs. Installation is a condition of our lease from the council.

Boundary Repair

One of the breaches in the fence was caused by this fallen hybrid black poplar, a species planted for its rapid growth in sandy soil and historically used by Bryant and May for the manufacture of matchsticks. Despite this, black poplar makes poor firewood! Poplar forms poor trunk compartments which are susceptible to fungal invasion. This is what brought this particular tree down

Liming the lake

SILTEX is a highly porous form of Calcium Carbonate consisting of microscopic particles with an average size of less than 5 microns and is used to reduce organic silt and improving water quality in lakes. The amount required is 1 tonne/acre and here is that amount being applied to our small lake. It's a messy business as Kerry will testify.

Repairs were made to the bund between the trout lake and the boating lake. The willows were felled and then secured to the ground with wire. Flooding in the future will not breach as happened this winter

Lake fishing management

Each fishing place around the lake is now identified by a number; north bank from N1 to N15, starting from the gate, and south bank, S1 to S14, starting from the hut; with one, identified as 0, at the west end. This is to assist identifying locations for work on the banks by the club and contractors such as tree surgeons as well as for the interest of members and their fishing records.
